New program provides free oncology treatments.

In May 2008, Tai Sophia Institute, in partnership with Howard County General Hospital and the hospital’s Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource Center (CMCRC), established an oncology treatment program that offers complimentary acupuncture and movement classes to individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer but do not have the financial resources to seek treatment.

Qualified patients are referred to the Tai Sophia program through the CMCRC. Physicians may refer qualified patients by sending them to the CMCRC along with a recommendation that they be enrolled in the Tai Sophia treatment program.

Movement classes designed specifically for cancer patients, including T’ai Chi Chih® and yoga, will be held at the Institute and consist of six one-hour sessions. Treatment providers are on staff at the Tai Sophia Clinical Services Centre and have experience working with medically-fragile patients.

In addition to providing need-based care, the goals of the program include providing opportunities for students in the clinical portion of Tai Sophia’s Master of Acupuncture program to observe licensed practitioners and learn about the treatment of patients who have been diagnosed and are living with cancer; surveying patients in order to determine possible benefits of treatment; and building relationships between Howard County General Hospital and Tai Sophia Institute.
