Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

Tai Sophia Institute is currently seeking a qualified candidate to provide vision and leadership for the delivery and administration of the student affairs operation.  The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Registrar will supervise several direct reports including the Registrar’s Staff and the Academic and Student Affairs Advisors and will work closely with the director of Admissions, in support of the excellent student experience.   Incumbent will report to the EVP and CEO of the Graduate School.  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with academic and administrative units, directing student service and retention activities
  • Evaluating, developing and implementing programs, standards and best practices. Developing policies and procedures affecting student success
  • Ensuring FERPA compliance regarding student records and the release of information. Providing direct oversight to staff producing transcripts and maintaining SIS. Directing the daily operations of the Registrar’s Office
  • Certifying transcripts for students and alumni, developing, administering and maintaining the Student Affairs budget. Consulting on functions uses and design of the Student Information System (SIS). Collaborating among offices (Financial Aid, Admissions, Bursar and Academic departments) to ensure services and support functions are coordinated
  • Serving as liaison with Department of Veterans Affairs and certifying VA students accordingly. Acting as Designated School official (DSO) with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and liaison with the SEVIS system
  • Facilitating strategic planning for the Student Affairs unit
  • Certifying and delivering reports for IPEDS and MHEC surveys

Director of Natural Care Centers

Tai Sophia Institute, the preeminent graduate school for the healing arts, is seeking a very special person to provide leadership and day-to-day operational oversight of its growing integrative natural care centers.  This is a new, 24-hour a week position that will grow into a full-time role as the Institute’s health and wellness services are expanded.  The position shall initially report to the Institute’s Executive Vice President and Chief Development and Operations Officer until a Managing Director of Wellness Resources is hired.

Currently with three natural care centers in Laurel, Silver Spring, and Baltimore, MD, and partnerships with several independent organizations, our goal is to provide “best practices,” health/wellness/self-care services by offering natural healing techniques based upon a whole person approach.  Our mission is to draw upon and apply Tai Sophia’s philosophy to create centers of transformation that support the healing and renewal processes.  The Director, Natural Care Centers will supervise several direct reports, including the Manager, Clinic Support Services, Clinical Quality Assurance Coordinator, Division Accountant, Practitioner Liaison, and Student Clinic Administrator.  At first, the Director, with support from the Institute’s executive leadership team, shall:

  • Provide leadership in assuring a collaborative work environment focused on exceptional patient care and services.
  • Develop an operating structure with equitable practitioner compensation plan.
  • Design a new residency program to benefit graduating students.
  • Create a new “best practices” natural care center model utilizing the teaching philosophy and assets of the Institute.
  • Provide supervision and development of practitioners, financial, and administrative staff of the Division.
  • Standardize an orientation process to ensure employees are knowledgeable about, and trained in, all relevant aspects to their position.
  • Create and maintain a process that establishes and promotes “best practice” across all natural care center sites and operations.
  • Research, creation and implementation of standards and practices.
  • Oversee policies, as well as quality assurance, contract and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop the Division’s annual budget and be accountable for its financial performance against the approved budget.
  • Work with the Managing Director of Wellness Resources in the preparation and implementation of the Division’s long-term business plan.
  • Define and track clinical operations performance goals as they relate to the overall goals of Tai Sophia.
  • Provide oversight of administrative and financial aspects of Tai Sophia’s student clinic to help assure the quality of the student clinic experience.  Collaborate with the Institute’s academic program directors and chair of the student clinic program.
  • Evaluate individual site compliance through the development of established policies, procedures, and outcomes.  Revise programs based on quality indicators and client/patient needs.
  • Oversee the audit and maintenance of information regarding State and Federal regulations, as well as Tai Sophia’s overall compliance database reporting system.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Human Enrichment in establishing effective recruitment and retention plans/ practices for practitioners and administrative staff.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Environment, Health and Safety to ensure regulatory compliance and the safety of patients and staff.
  • Support implementation of Tai Sophia’s clinical research initiatives, collaborating with staff, faculty, and external partners.
  • Oversee the start-up of new facilities and coordinate all facets of a smooth process.
  • Oversee implementation of new programs related to client/patient care and participate in business reviews to evaluate progress of implementation.
  • Represent clinical operations at both internal and external meetings as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development of strategic partnerships with external organizations, particularly as they relate to the activities and needs of the Tai Sophia Community Health Initiatives and the Student Clinic.

The ideal candidate will hold a Masters Degree in wellness/health-related field. A licensed professional is preferred: Acupuncture, Nutrition, Nursing, Counseling, Registered Herbal Medicine Practitioner. He/She will also possess the following: Outstanding leadership and people skills. 5-10 years experience as a wellness/health care practitioner. Ability to lead and manage a multidisciplinary clinic practice. Ability to be methodical and procedural; to develop and follow good quality assurance protocols. Excellent communication, written and verbal skills. Ability to motivate and build cohesive teams and maintain collaborative leadership approach. Knowledge of basic accounting and financial schedules.

Assistant Instructor - Course:   508 Acupuncture Theory (Spring Trimester, 2009)

We are currently seeking a person to assist the lead teacher in the basic theory class taught in the first trimester of the M.Ac. program.  The course combines instruction with a great deal of experiential work to deliver the fundamental laws and gifts of the Five Elements to beginning students. This course is delivered via 35-40 classroom hours each trimester in the Fall and Spring trimesters.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Reading one third of the students’ weekly written assignments.
  • Leading one third of the students in small group discussions around the elements.
  • Creating and grading weekly quizzes for the students.
  • Contributing to large group discussions;.

Job Summary: Maintain responsibility for providing proactive advising to student population that supports the welfare of the student as a whole person and the success of each student in his or her educational, personal and social transformation, which also enhances the rate of student development, success and retention.

  • Advise students regarding academic progress from the first term through graduation on a frequent and proactive basis individually and in groups
  • Provide outreach to existing students
