Workplace Wellness Programs will be explored
as Viable and Promising Solutions
It is no secret that our current health care system is in urgent need of care and in spite of increased access to sophisticated research about how to stay healthy, our nation is fast becoming increasingly unhealthy, while the cost of health care continues to rise.
The United States is number 1 in obesity, 37th in infant mortality rate, and tied at 54th with Fiji for fairness in health care, yet it is spending over 16% of the GDP on health care—the highest per person by far in the world.
As health care experts look to address the epidemic of chronic disease and the out-of- control cost of health care, the solutions must be multi-faceted and must take a multi-discipline approach. A shift must be made from a system that focuses solely on sick-care and disease management, to one that is invested in prevention, self-care, self-responsibility and wellness. Regardless of who pays the bills, unless we begin to emphasize health care prevention, all the increased health care coverage in the world will not truly solve the problems of the growing cost of health care, the deteriorating health and the subsequent loss of employee productivity.
