About Us

The Herbal Clinic for All (HCFA) is a collaborative effort of faculty, staff, graduates and students to bring community herbalism to a population who typically would not be able to afford the cost of an herbal consultation and a personalized herbal preparation. This donation-based community herbal clinic offers the services of community herbalists one day a month at the Tai Sophia student clinic in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Herbs have traditionally been an integral part of the home and community, and for this reason they are often referred to as the “people’s medicine”.  In recent time, the role of the community herbalist has waned and the development of herbal medicine as an “alternative" or "complementary" therapy has developed.  In this way, herbal medicine has provided a service for a population privileged to be able to pay for their choice in healthcare and subsequently has become out of reach for a large number of individuals.  The HCFA seeks to shift the use of herbs back to the hands of the people.

Mission

  • To provide quality herbal access to a population in need in the DC metropolitan area;
  • To work to re-establish the tradition of herbal medicine in the home and community;
  • To empower clients to achieve greater health, wellness, and health education through the use of herbs and nutrition;
  • To bring nature into the lives of an urban population through the use of medicinal plants;
  • To expand understanding and appreciation of herbs in the greater community.

Services are provided by graduates of the Tai Sophia Master of Science in Herbal Medicine program.  Robyn Urbach MS, and Bevin Clare MS, RH (AHG) are co-directors of the HCFA, and operate the clinic with the support of additional faculty, staff, students and graduates of Tai Sophia.  Custom herbal formulas will be provided on a donation basis to clients of the clinic, and will be certified organic whenever possible.
