Robert M. Duggan

President

Robert Duggan, President and Co-Founder of Tai Sophia Institute, has practiced traditional acupuncture since 1973. He holds a master’s degree in human relations and community studies from New York University as well as a master’s degree in moral theology from St. Joseph’s Seminary, and received his master’s certification in acupuncture from the College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (UK). A national leader in the development of the acupuncture profession and the emerging healing arts community, he has served as a commissioner of the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, on the board of trustees of the Horizon Foundation (a community wellness foundation in Howard County, Maryland, which in 2008 honored him with its annual Leadership Award), and a panelist at meetings sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In February 2009, Duggan testified before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and in November 2009, he was among 20 leading thinkers, innovators, artists, philosophers, and entertainers selected to present at the first TEDx MidAtlantic Conference. Mr. Duggan lectures throughout the United States and abroad, and is author of Common Sense for the Healing Arts (2003). 

 

Dianne M. Connelly

Chancellor

Chancellor and Co-Founder of Tai Sophia Institute, and a practitioner of traditional acupuncture since 1973, Dr. Connelly received her master's qualification from the College of Traditional Acupuncture (UK) in 1979. She earned a doctorate in crosscultural medicine from Union Graduate School in 1975, a master's degree from New York University School of Education in 1970, and her bachelor's degree from Le Moyne College in 1967. An international lecturer (she lectures regularly in Italy and Germany), Connelly is the author of Traditional Acupuncture: The Law of the Five Elements (1975), All Sickness is Homesickness (1986), Medicine Words: Language of Love for the Treatment Room of Life (2009),  and with Katherine Hancock Porter, Alive and Awake: Wisdom for Kids (2003). She is the mother of Blaize, Jade, and Caeli, as well as grandmother to Tamar, Lennox, Rianna, Roman, and Maxim.

   
 

Frank Vitale

Chief Executive Officer

Drawn to Tai Sophia by the values and principles that have so ably guided the Institute, Frank Vitale first assumed the role of Vice President for Business and Finance in 2007 and was subsequently elected Executive Vice President and Chief Development and Operations Officer in September 2008. In October 2009, he was named Chief Executive Officer. With 30 years of experience in business development, finance and operations management for major for-profit and public benefit organizations, his career has focused on strategic growth, operational excellence, resource development, public affairs, and advocacy. He has served as a senior vice president, strategic development and corporate affairs of a $4.3 billion international technologies company and, more recently, as chief operating officer of a large Baltimore-headquartered 501(c)(3) public benefit organization with programs in mental health and education. Mr. Vitale earned a master’s in business administration from Temple University, a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Delaware Valley College, and completed the executive business management programs at the Harvard Business School, Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and the Center for Management Design in California.

   
 

Judith K. Broida

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Judith Broida joined Tai Sophia as Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2008. In October 2009, she was appointed the additional post of Provost. Previously she served as Associate Provost and Dean of Professional Studies at the University of Maryland; as Associate Dean of Public Policy, Planning and Urban Development at the University of Southern California; and as Associate Dean and Director of the Division of Business and Management at Johns Hopkins University. In each institution, her goal was to create stimulating and energizing learning opportunities for the non-traditional student and to enhance the quality of the academic experience for faculty, students, and the community. Several of these unique programs, such as the Business of Medicine, have won national awards. Dr. Broida has taught graduate courses for over 15 years at these institutions. In addition, she worked at a Fortune 100 company and two federal government agencies as head of human resource development. For 25 years she has been consulting in leadership, strategic planning, board development, organizational change, human resource development, and customer service. Her undergraduate degree from George Washington University is in Sociology/Art History. She has two master’s degrees — from George Washington University in Counseling, and from Johns Hopkins in Management — and a PhD from the University of Maryland. She was selected to participate in the Leadership Maryland program in 2001, is a graduate of Harvard’s Management and Leadership in Education program, was chosen a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Examiner (State of Maryland), and has twice (2000 and 2002) been named one of the Top 100 Women in Maryland.

   
 

Barbara Ellrich

Chief Values Officer

Barbara Ellrich came to Tai Sophia Institute in 1981, serving in a variety of roles including Registrar, Director of Admissions, Academic Dean, Vice President for Education, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of the Graduate School. In these positions she developed the depth of insight and skills she brings to her current role of Chief Values Officer. Since 1989 she has represented Tai Sophia on the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM), where she currently serves as treasurer and is a member of the executive committee. Born in Colombia, South America, she is fluent in both Spanish and German. Ms. Ellrich holds a master's degree in Applied Healing Arts from Tai Sophia Institute.

   
 

Lisa Connelly-Duggan

Senior Vice President for External Affairs and Technology

For close to a decade Lisa Connelly-Duggan has served and supported the growth of the Institute.  She began her service at Tai Sophia Institute in 1999 in the Office of Admissions, becoming Director of Graduate Admissions. In 2003, she was named Vice President for Enrollment, broadening her role to include oversight of graduate admissions, marketing, publications, public relations, events, and community programs.  As the Institute has evolved, so has Lisa’s role, from offering leadership through the move to a new campus, the launch of two new graduate programs in 2002, the Middle States accreditation process, to building the current executive leadership team.  Most recently Lisa was promoted to Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Technology, thus spearheading the Institute’s advances in information technology and the integration of a campus-wide database solution.  She is a graduate of the Master of Arts in Applied Healing Arts degree program at Tai Sophia and received her bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Delaware. Before coming to Tai Sophia, Lisa worked for the United States House of Representatives, Committee on Education and Labor, during the 103rd–105th Congresses.

   
 

Timothy J. Ambrose

Vice President for Advancement

Tim Ambrose brings over 26 years of professional fundraising and non-profit management to Tai Sophia. During his career, Tim has been responsible for directing and leading staff, volunteers, and board members in securing over $175 million in gifts and grants. He served as a vice president for such well-known institutions as Interlochen Center for the Arts, The National Parks Conservation Association, Erickson Retirement Communities, and the Nashville Symphony.  Tim also held senior development positions at the University of Maryland and The Denver Symphony.  With an extensive background in serving on community and non-profit boards, Tim currently serves as a member of the Chesapeake Planned Giving Council Board.  He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Michigan University.

   
 

Marc Levin

Vice President for Business and Financial Services

Marc Levin joined Tai Sophia in March 2008 as Associate Vice President for Financial Services, and was promoted to Vice President for Business and Financial Services in September 2008. Marc has over 20 years of experience in accounting, finance, and operations for public and private healthcare companies. He is proud to use his talents not only to strengthen the financial foundation of Tai Sophia, but also to expand Tai Sophia’s impact on the world. Marc holds an M.B.A. and a B.S. in accounting from the University of Maryland, and is also a certified public accountant.
