Accreditation
Tai Sophia Institute is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Institute’s graduate certificates and degrees are endorsed by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). The Institute’s Master of Acupuncture and Graduate Certificate in Chinese Herbs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).

Notable Dates
- 1974 – Incorporated in Maryland as the College of Chinese Acupuncture, U.S., by co-founders Bob Duggan and Dianne Connelly.
- 1975 – The Institute’s co-founders and their partners open the Centre for Traditional Acupuncture (now the Natural Care Center), one of Maryland’s first acupuncture clinics, in Columbia, MD.
- 1978 – The college amends its charter and the name is changed to the Traditional Acupuncture Institute (TAI).
- 1981 – First class in acupuncture begins.
- 1985 – TAI is the first school accredited by the National Accreditation Commission for Schools and Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NACSCAOM), now known as the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).
- 1986 – Maryland Higher Education Commission empowers TAI to bestow the Master of Acupuncture (M.Ac.) degree.
- 2000 – TAI is renamed Tai Sophia Institute to reflect its expanding mission and encompass its new programs.
- 2002 – New master’s programs in Herbal Medicine and Applied Healing Arts begin classes. Tai Sophia Institute moves to its new 12-acre campus south of Columbia, MD.
- 2006 – Tai Sophia Institute is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
- 2009 – Tai Sophia Institute enhances Applied Healing Arts program and changes program name to Transformative Leadership and Social Change. The Institute receives approval to offer graduate certificates in Transformative Leadership, Herbal Studies, and Medical Herbalism.
- 2010 – Tai Sophia Institute receives approval to offer graduate certificates in Health Coaching and Wellness Coaching.

- Tai Sophia has confirmed approximately 1,675 graduate certificates and degrees with graduates representing 38 states and five countries.
- Tai Sophia’s clinical services deliver 35,500 health and wellness treatments and consultations annually.
- Tai Sophia faculty and students donate more than 15,000 community service hours annually through clinical partnerships.
- Campus resources available to the public include a library, a bookstore, and herb and meditation gardens.
